The Republican Party is now a terrorist organization that the media bends over backwards trying to sanitize daily. The interview last night on 60 minutes was an example of the media pulling the bothsideserisms claiming Walz lied about when he was in China which was a minor issue, but he needed to explain to the audience as to how could possible voters trust him now. And that Harris flip flopped on fracking. Seriously? Telling Harris that she’s accused Trump of saying/being a racist and how she could reach out to his supporters after that accusation? The dudes a walking, talking kkk nazi for christ sakes… 60 min was hoping for a brash reply along the truthful lines of how his followers are deplorables so they could run that clip for the next 3 weeks.
Great write-up on post-truth politics. I especially appreciated our inability to reach common ground because one party lives in lulu land. Did you hear our economy is in a shambles (strongest economy in the world)? Did you hear inflation is through the roof and we have to get it under control (down to 2.5% with wages growing 4%)? Lulu land is a dreamscape for the cult members, near Four Seasons lawn care.
Terra and JD Vance are distant cousins who have never met. They grew up in different states, with family lineage that intersected generations ago. But now, as the U.S. senator from Ohio leans on his Appalachian roots in his campaign for the White House, Terra Vance has garnered a following as a fiery and knowledgeable critic.
She sees JD Vance's 2016 memoir,
"Hillbilly Elegy," and how he's used his background to appeal to voters since as a disservice to her hometown and last name. In her view, his story blames people who have been exploited — in some cases by the coal mining and pharmaceutical industries — for their own exploitation while painting himself as special for escaping the same fate.
"He cosplayed a hillbilly and tokenized himself as the golden child who worked hard to overcome adversity," Terra Vance said. "What he's peddling now — what he is doing to other marginalized groups — is exactly what has always been done to us."

Well said!! It’s exactly why I couldn’t watch but a few minutes. The years of pathological lying, right to my face, has tested my patience to the limit and it was more than I could stand. It enrages me and I can’t walk around pissed off all day. I have to take a break because it’s insulting, disrespectful and I’m DONE! I feel like you’re speaking for so many of us here in MO. Thank you for writing this and for all of your work.
I didn't watch the debate either, for the same reason. It's emotionally draining and doesn't accomplish anything watching (imho). That being said, I didn't watch the Trump/Harris debate for the same reason. I couldn't stomach watching him lie and spread his nonsense. I was relieved to hear how well Kamala did, but I found out all I needed to know reading the recaps the next day. The election can't come soon enough.
Great explanation, Michele, and I understand your desire not to subject yourself to the predictably nonsensical debate. My wife felt the same way. I, however, wanted to bear witness to the forces of good against evil, and while I was concerned about Coach Walz's fumbles and stumbles early on (clearly nerves), he found his footing, and exposed Vance's rank hypocrisy. Vance, for his part, controlled his smarminess for most of the debate, and it remained civil. I thought the moderators did an excellent job (others will disagree), and provided some timely fact-checking and a fair balance of pointed questions for each candidate.
All that said, the debate is old news. The Republican ticket seeks to win at all costs (borne by others of course) by sowing chaos in every way possible. Lies, projection, misdirection, whataboutisms, false equivalency arguments, and outrageous statements will abound. It's important for both the Harris Campaign and the rest of us to remain focused and avoid the distractions. We cannot allow ourselves to chase after every shiny object or correct every lie. We must be strategic, and do our job to get out the vote. A massive BLUE WAVE can wash away the toxic RED TIDE!
Holy hell. The TheoBros patriarch, Douglas Wilson, comes from the Jesus People movement, which spawned the Children of God (led by David "Moses" Berg). My parents were in the CoG and I know way too much about their sick version of religion. However bad you think this is, it is so much worse.
That Mother Jones piece is truly enlightening – an important read, because we need to better understand these players. I was glad to find that article.
I'm so sorry you have such an intimate understanding of the Children of God movement.

Thank you, Carl! 💙 And it's so true – when one side says down is up and up is down, it's very hard to get your bearings.

It’s really amazing & disturbing how easily the Republicans lie! I suppose practice does make perfect!
You are so right. It's just terribly sad they have so much practice.

Where does one find the name and phone number for their House representative ?
Hi Meg! Such a great question – I'll add this to the post as well so I appreciate you flagging it for me. You can go to this website and enter your Zip Code: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative
That will give you your rep's name and a hyperlink to their website.
You can also call the US House switchboard: (202) 224-3121
